Each summer Caitlin travels from her mother's home in Santa Fe to be with her father, stepmother and new baby on Martha's Vineyard. When she becomes a teenager she chooses Vix to be her "summer sister" and accompany her to the Vineyard. That marks the beginning of six consecutive summers when Vix and Caitlin are together, sharing secrets, first loves, family concerns and boyfriends. Caitlin's wealthy family takes Vix in and secures a scholarship for her to a private school and then assists her when she attends Harvard. Caitlin betrays Vix when she has a child by Vix's former boyfriend and the two drift apart, though their friendship never really ends. (400 pages)
